What are dental implants?
Dental implants are used to help replace a tooth or teeth that are missing. The implants are inserted into the jawbone where the root of a tooth once was and cannot be seen once they have been surgically implanted. The implants are made of titanium as it has the ability to fuse to the bone, called osseointegration. Titanium is also bio compatible, which means that it is not rejected by the body.
History of Dental Implants
Dental implants are common in today’s modern dentistry techniques, dating back to the first use in the 1970’s. However simple types of dental implants have been used by humans for many years, the first such find can be dated back to 600 A.D during the Mayan civilization. Materials such as bone, shell, carved stone or jade have been found to have been used to replace missing teeth. Some of these materials actually fused in the jawbone itself. The use of titanium as a successful material to use for an implant was discovered accidentally in 1952 when an orthopaedic surgeon found that he was unable to remove a piece of titanium he had inserted into a jawbone to study how bone healed.
