How to Make Brushing Fun for Kids

Post by : Dr. James Connan BChD GDC No. 230670 | 8 May 2025

Encouraging children to brush their teeth can often feel like a daily challenge. However, building good dental habits from a young age is crucial for lifelong oral health. If you’re a parent dealing with resistance or boredom around brushing, you’re certainly not alone. Fortunately, with a bit of creativity and consistency, brushing can become a fun and positive part of your child’s routine.

Why Brushing Matters for Children

Children’s teeth are just as vulnerable to decay and gum disease as adult teeth. In fact, poor brushing habits during the early years can lead to tooth decay, discomfort, infections, and even difficulties with speaking and eating. Developing a strong brushing routine early on not only protects your child’s teeth, but also helps form lifelong habits that promote overall health.

1. Choose a Fun Toothbrush and Flavoured Toothpaste

Let your child choose their own toothbrush—whether it features their favourite cartoon character, bright colours, or even lights and sounds. Brushes designed for children are softer and smaller, making brushing more comfortable and enjoyable.

Pair it with a toothpaste that tastes good to them. Child-friendly flavours such as strawberry or mild mint can make the process more appealing, while still offering the fluoride protection their teeth need.

2. Turn Brushing into a Game

Children love games, so why not make brushing part of the fun? Use a reward chart and give them a sticker every time they brush without fuss. After a week or so, they can earn a small treat or activity of their choice.

There are also mobile apps and videos available that guide children through the full two minutes of brushing using music, animations, and characters. These tools keep children engaged while ensuring they brush for the right length of time.

3. Brush Together

Young children learn by copying adults. Brushing your teeth alongside your child makes it a shared experience rather than a chore. You can add to the fun by pulling silly faces in the mirror or inventing a toothbrushing dance.

Not only does this encourage better technique, but it also shows your child that dental care is a normal part of everyone’s routine.

4. Use a Timer or Song

Many children find it hard to judge how long to brush for. Use a sand timer, digital timer, or even a two-minute song to help guide them. There are plenty of cheerful brushing songs available online, and your child can choose their favourite to play during every session.

5. Tell a Tooth Story

Use imagination to turn your child into the hero of their own dental adventure! Pretend that each tooth is a tiny castle, and their toothbrush is a brave knight fighting off sugar bugs. This kind of storytelling makes brushing more exciting and helps keep them motivated.

Encourage them to “defend the kingdom” by thoroughly brushing all their teeth.

6. Offer Praise and Encouragement

Always praise your child for their efforts with brushing, even if the technique isn’t perfect at first. Focus on building a positive association with the habit, and gently guide improvements over time. Consistent encouragement will boost their confidence and willingness to keep brushing.
