How Do I Maintain My Dental Implants?

How Do I Maintain My Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a modern, permanent solution for missing teeth, but their longevity depends on how well you take care of them. Whether you’re new to implants or looking to improve your oral hygiene routine, this guide covers everything you need to know about daily care, tools to use, and when to see your dentist.

Why Dental Implant Maintenance Matters

Even though dental implants don’t decay like natural teeth, they’re surrounded by gum tissue and bone that are vulnerable to infection. Without proper care, this can lead to:

  • Peri-implantitis (a gum infection around the implant)
  • Bone loss
  • Implant failure

Routine maintenance protects your implant, surrounding teeth, and overall oral health.

Daily Dental Implant Care at Home

Brushing Techniques

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a cordless electric toothbrush. Brush at least twice a day, focusing on the gumline and implant crown. Your dental hygienist can show you the proper angles to ensure a thorough clean.

Ask your hygienist to demonstrate brushing around your specific implant structure.

Flossing

Implants need flossing just like natural teeth. Use:

  • Implant-specific floss like Super Floss
  • Floss threaders to reach under bridges or implant bars.

Daily flossing prevents plaque buildup and inflammation.

Water Flossers

Also known as oral irrigators, these are effective for flushing out bacteria around implants, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Some come with antimicrobial rinse capabilities for added cleanliness.

Interproximal (Proxy) Brushes

These small brushes are ideal for cleaning between implants, under bars, or around abutments. Be sure to use implant-safe versions that don’t damage soft tissue.

Products to Use (and Avoid)

Recommended Toothpastes

  • Use fluoride toothpaste (safe for implants)
  • Choose non-abrasive formulas

Avoid:

  • Whitening toothpastes
  • Smokers’ toothpaste
  • Pastes with baking soda or stain removers. These can wear down porcelain or damage acrylic used in implant restorations.

Mouthwash Tips

Choose alcohol-free mouth rinses. Alcohol can dry out the mouth and irritate soft tissues, especially if you already experience dry mouth.

Professional Dental Visits

You should visit your dentist every 3 to 6 months, depending on:

  • Your gum health
  • Implant type and number
  • Personal oral hygiene

At these visits, we:

  • Professionally clean around implants
  • Check for signs of inflammation or implant movement.
  • Review your home-care routine.

Your dentist will tailor a recall schedule that suits your individual needs.
